What should I do if my car fails its MOT?
First, take the failure sheet, because it lists every reason the car failed and whether each is a Major or Dangerous fault. Then get the work booked in promptly. If your previous MOT has run out, or the car has a Dangerous fault, driving it is an offence, so the sensible move is to have the repairs and retest done by the same garage. Bring the sheet to us and we will price the work before we start.
Can I drive my car after it fails?
It depends on the fault and your certificate. If your existing MOT is still valid and none of the faults are marked Dangerous, you may be able to drive it in the short term. If the previous certificate has expired, or anything is listed as Dangerous, the car should not be on the road. How the retest works
This is where doing the repairs in the same place pays off. When a garage that tested your car also carries out the repairs, the retest is usually straightforward and, in many cases, free if it is done within the allowed window and only the failed items are involved. How long do I have to get MOT repairs done?
There is no fixed legal deadline to repair the car, but you cannot drive it on the road without a valid MOT unless you are going to a pre-booked test or repair. For a free or reduced retest, the work generally needs to be done within a set window of the original test, which we will explain when you book.
Will the retest cost me again?
Often not. When the same centre repairs the failed items and retests within the allowed period, the retest is usually free or reduced. We will tell you exactly where you stand before we start.
Can you collect my car if it is not safe to drive?
Yes. If the car has a dangerous fault or no valid MOT, we can recover it from around Cardiff and bring it to the workshop, so you are not risking a drive you should not be making.
Do I have to get the repairs done where I had the test?
No, you are free to have MOT repairs done anywhere. The advantage of using the test centre is that the repair and retest happen in one place, which saves you time and a second trip.
What is the difference between a Major and a Dangerous fault?
A Major fault means the car has failed and must be repaired. A Dangerous fault means it is unsafe to drive and should not be used on the road until fixed. Both appear on your failure sheet.
