Car Tyres in Cardiff

Your tyres are the only part of the car touching the road, so worn or damaged tyres are a safety issue first and a comfort issue second. At CF3 MOT & Service Centre in Rumney, we supply and fit tyres for every budget and vehicle, from a single replacement to a full set, plus puncture repairs and balancing, often the same day.

Buying tyres should not be a guessing game. This page covers when to replace them, how to check tread yourself, whether budget tyres are worth it, what can be repaired, and the size question that puts people off calling.

When should you replace your tyres?

Replace a tyre once it is worn, damaged, or ageing. The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round, and driving below that risks a fine and points per tyre. Grip in the wet drops well before the legal limit, so the safe point to replace is earlier than the law demands, not right at the edge.

Replace sooner than wear alone if you find sidewall cracks, bulges, or a cut deep enough to reach the structure. Damage like that does not get better, and a bulge can let go at speed.

Legal minimum is 1.6mm — but wet grip drops well before that. Replace before the limit, not at it.

How to check your tyre tread.

Checking tyre tread depth at CF3 MOT Service Centre Cardiff

You can check tread in under a minute with a 20p coin. Push the coin into the main grooves, and if the outer band of the coin is hidden, your tread is comfortably above the limit. If you can see that band, the tyre is getting low and should be checked, because the coin's border sits at roughly 3mm, a sensible point to start planning replacement rather than waiting for 1.6mm. Do this across the tyre and around it, since tyres often wear unevenly, which can itself signal an alignment problem.

  • Push a 20p into the main tread grooves
  • Outer band hidden — tread is above 3mm, you are fine
  • Outer band visible — tyre is getting low, plan replacement
  • Check across and around the tyre — uneven wear can signal an alignment problem

How to read your tyre size.

You do not need to know your size before you call, but it is printed on the sidewall if you want it. A marking like 205/55 R16 91V tells you the width in millimetres, the profile, the wheel diameter in inches, and the load and speed ratings. Easier still, give us the registration and we will pull the correct size and rating for your car automatically, so there is no risk of fitting the wrong spec.

Are budget tyres worth it, or should you pay for premium?

It depends on how and how much you drive. Premium tyres generally stop shorter in the wet and last longer, which suits high-mileage drivers and faster A-road and motorway use. Budget and mid-range tyres make sense on a low-mileage city car doing short trips around St Mellons and the school run. We will offer a few options at different prices and explain the trade-off, rather than pushing the dearest set on the shelf. Whatever you choose should be a matched pair on an axle for even handling.

Budget & mid-range

Low-mileage city driving

  • Short trips around Cardiff
  • School runs and local journeys
  • Lower annual mileage
  • Cost-effective for the job
Premium

High-mileage & fast roads

  • Shorter stopping in the wet
  • A-road and motorway use
  • Higher annual mileage
  • Longer tread life overall

Whatever you choose, always fit a matched pair on the same axle for even handling.

Can my puncture be repaired, or do I need a new tyre?

A puncture can often be repaired if the damage is small, sits within the central repairable zone of the tread, and the tyre is otherwise sound. Punctures in the sidewall or shoulder, or on a tyre run flat and overheated, cannot be safely repaired and need replacement. We assess every puncture against the safety rules and only repair the ones it is right to repair. A proper plug-and-patch repair from the inside is safe and long-lasting, unlike a cheap external plug.

Can be repaired

Repairable punctures

  • Small puncture in the central tread zone
  • Tyre is otherwise in sound condition
  • Has not been run flat or overheated
  • Repaired properly from the inside
Needs replacement

Non-repairable damage

  • Puncture in the sidewall or shoulder
  • Tyre has been run flat and overheated
  • Damage too large or structural
  • Tyre otherwise worn or compromised

We only repair punctures it is right to repair. A proper plug-and-patch from the inside is safe and long-lasting — unlike a cheap external plug.

A word on part-worn tyres.

They look like one. They rarely are.

Worn part-worn tyre — not worth the risk

Part-worn tyres often arrive with little usable tread left, an unknown history of damage, and ageing rubber — so the cost per remaining mile is frequently worse than a new budget tyre.

Little tread left

You are paying for what has already been used.

Unknown damage history

Previous impacts, repairs, or overloading cannot be seen.

Ageing rubber

Rubber degrades with age regardless of mileage.

For the small saving, you give up grip and peace of mind on the one component keeping you on the road. We do not recommend them.

Tyres, brakes and stopping distance

Tyres and brakes work as a system, so if stopping feels off it is worth checking both. Tyres provide the grip, the brakes provide the force, and a weakness in either lengthens your stopping distance. If you are replacing tyres because of a long-feeling brake pedal, the issue may not be the tyres at all.

Tyres

Provide the grip. Worn or wrong-spec tyres reduce traction regardless of brake condition.

Brakes

Provide the stopping force. Worn pads or discs lengthen the stopping distance even on good tyres.

Safe stopping

Both need to be sound. A weakness in either lengthens stopping distance.

Tyre questions.

What is the legal tyre tread depth in the UK?

1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around its full circumference. Below that is illegal and risks a fine and penalty points for each tyre.

Can you fit tyres the same day?

Often, yes. On common sizes we usually have stock to fit while you wait, and we can order in less common sizes quickly. Call with your registration to check.

Should I replace all four tyres at once?

Not always. Tyres should be replaced in matched pairs on the same axle at minimum, but you do not have to change serviceable tyres just because others are worn.

Why are my new tyres wearing out so fast?

Rapid or uneven wear usually points to wheel alignment, incorrect tyre pressures, or a suspension fault rather than the tyres themselves. We can check the cause so the next set lasts.

Do you do puncture repairs?

Yes, where the damage is safely repairable under the rules. We assess the puncture and tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement is the right call.
