Cambelt Replacement in Cardiff

A cambelt should be replaced at the interval your manufacturer sets, because if it snaps the engine can be destroyed in seconds. At CF3 MOT & Service Centre in Rumney, we replace cambelts to schedule using quality parts, so you avoid a repair bill that often runs into four figures.

The cambelt, also called the timing belt, keeps the top and bottom of your engine turning in sync. If you are trying to work out whether yours is due, what it costs, or whether your car even has a belt at all, this page covers it.

How often should a cambelt be replaced?

Most manufacturers set cambelt replacement somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, or every four to six years, whichever comes first. The exact figure is in your handbook and varies by make and engine, so do not assume a neighbour's interval applies to yours.

The years matter as much as the miles. Rubber ages whether the car is thrashed daily or sits on a drive in St Mellons, so a low-mileage car that is six or seven years old can still need a belt. If the date is approaching and the mileage is low, the date usually wins.

Does my car have a cambelt, a timing chain, or a wet belt?

This is the first thing to settle, because all three are different. A cambelt is a dry rubber belt on the outside of the engine that needs changing on schedule. A timing chain runs in oil and is designed to last much longer, often the life of the engine, though it is not maintenance-free. A wet belt is a rubber belt that runs inside the engine in oil, and it fails in its own way.

If you drive a Ford EcoBoost or a Peugeot, Citroën, DS or Vauxhall with the 1.2 PureTech engine, you almost certainly have a wet belt, not a conventional cambelt, and you need our wet belt inspection and replacement service instead. Not sure which you have? Give us your registration and we will tell you in a minute.

Signs of a failing cambelt.

CF3 mechanic inspecting a cambelt in Cardiff

Most cambelts give little warning before they go, which is the whole reason for changing them on time rather than waiting for symptoms. When there are signs, watch for:

  • A high-pitched whir, squeal or ticking from the timing cover
  • Difficulty starting, or rough running
  • A misfire under load
  • Visible cracking or fraying if the cover is removed during a service

Should you change the water pump with the cambelt?

Usually, yes. On many engines the cambelt drives the water pump, so the pump is already exposed during the job and most of the labour is shared. Replacing a tired pump at the same time costs a little more in parts but saves you paying the full labour again in a year when the old pump fails. Leaving it in is a common false economy, which is why we change the belt, tensioner, idlers and water pump as a kit where the engine is built that way.

What happens if a cambelt snaps?

On most modern engines, which are "interference" designs, a snapped cambelt lets the pistons hit the valves at speed. That bends valves, can crack pistons, and frequently means a rebuilt or replaced engine. A few older engines are "non-interference" and survive a snapped belt, but you should never gamble on which yours is.

A tow and a rebuild.

What affects the cost of a cambelt change?

Three things mainly drive the price: how hard the belt is to reach on your particular engine, whether the water pump and a full kit are done at the same time, and the parts your car needs. Transverse engines in tight bays take longer than simpler layouts. We quote on your registration so the figure reflects your car, and we will always tell you up front whether the water pump should be done with it.

Engine accessibility

Transverse engines in tight bays take longer to access than simpler layouts, which affects labour time.

Full kit vs belt only

Replacing the water pump, tensioner and idlers at the same time shares the labour and reduces the overall cost.

Buying a used car with no cambelt history

If you have picked up a used car around Cardiff and the paperwork does not show a cambelt change, treat it as overdue until proven otherwise. A missing service history is not proof the belt was done, and the cost of assuming wrong is the engine. Booking a change soon after purchase is cheap insurance on a car you do not yet know the full history of. While it is in, our engine diagnostics team can read any stored fault codes so you know what else you have bought.

No cambelt history in the paperwork? Treat it as overdue. The cost of assuming wrong is the engine.

Cambelt questions.

How do I know when my cambelt is due?

Check your handbook for the mileage and age interval, then go by whichever you reach first. If you have lost the paperwork or bought the car used without records, give us the registration and we will advise.

Is it worth changing the cambelt early?

If the car is close to the interval, or the history is unknown, yes. The cost of an early change is small next to the cost of an engine, so erring on the early side is the safe call.

How long does a cambelt replacement take?

Most take the best part of a day, depending on how accessible the belt is on your engine and whether the water pump is changed with it. We will give you a time on your registration.

Do diesel cars have cambelts too?

Many do, and on diesels a snapped belt is just as destructive. Some diesels use chains and some newer ones use wet belts, so it is worth confirming which your engine has.

Can you change a cambelt and service the car in one visit?

Yes, and it often makes sense. Combining a full service with the belt change means one drop-off and one set of access labour rather than two.
