What are the signs your wheel alignment is out?
The clearest signs are a car that pulls on a straight road and tyres that wear faster on one edge. Look out for:
- The car drifting left or right on a flat, straight road like the A48
- Uneven tyre wear, with one shoulder of the tread going before the rest
- A steering wheel sitting off-centre when you are driving straight ahead
- Vague, wandering steering that needs constant small corrections
If you have to hold the wheel slightly turned to go straight, that is misalignment until proven otherwise.

What causes a car to go out of alignment.
Alignment slips for ordinary, everyday reasons. The biggest culprit around Cardiff is potholes, and there are plenty off Eastern Avenue and the side roads through Llanrumney. Two-wheel or four-wheel alignment: what is the difference?
Two-wheel alignment, or front tracking, adjusts the front wheels only and suits many older or simpler cars. Four-wheel alignment measures and sets all four wheels against each other, which most modern cars need because the rear geometry matters too. Wheel alignment is not wheel balancing
These get mixed up constantly, and they fix different problems. Alignment is about the angles of the wheels and shows up as pulling and uneven wear. Balancing corrects tiny weight differences around a wheel and tyre and shows up as a vibration through the steering at speed, usually around 50 to 70 mph. If your steering shakes at motorway speed, you probably need balancing, which we do when fitting car tyres. If the car pulls or eats a tyre edge, you need alignment.

Why correct alignment is worth doing properly
Correct alignment does three jobs at once. It makes the car safer and easier to steer, it spreads tyre wear evenly so a set lasts its full life, and it cuts the rolling resistance that quietly raises your fuel bills. There is no fixed interval, but it is worth checking yearly, after fitting new tyres, after any suspension work, and any time you clout a serious pothole or kerb.
Does wheel alignment really improve fuel economy?
Yes, modestly. Misaligned wheels scrub against the road and raise rolling resistance, so correcting them reduces drag and helps tyres last, which both save money over time.
Will alignment stop my steering wheel being off-centre?
That is exactly what it corrects. We straighten the steering wheel as part of setting the front toe, so it sits level when you drive straight.
