Two Cardiff drivers can ring the same four garages on the same morning and come away with quotes that look like they belong to different jobs, because on a clutch they usually do. The figure is set by three things on your car: whether a dual mass flywheel sits behind the clutch and whether it is being replaced, how many hours the gearbox takes to come out and go back in, and whether the concentric slave cylinder and the rest of the hydraulics are inside the price or waiting outside it.
We quote clutches from the registration rather than publishing a figure, because a published figure would be wrong for most of the people reading it. What follows is the thing a figure cannot give you: what sits behind the number, what a proper quote itemises line by line, and how to hold two quotes side by side and see which one is actually cheaper.

It depends on the car to a degree that makes a single published figure misleading, and any garage quoting a number before it knows what you drive is quoting a guess. A small petrol hatchback with a solid flywheel and an external slave cylinder sits at one end. A 2.0 diesel estate with a tired dual mass flywheel, a concentric slave cylinder inside the bellhousing and a subframe that has to come down sits a long way from it, and the gap is wider than most drivers expect.
Three things account for nearly all of that gap.
The registration turns that range into a price. From the reg we get the engine code, the gearbox code and the build date, and those three tell us whether the car left the factory with a solid or dual mass flywheel, whether the release system is a concentric slave cylinder or an external cylinder and fork, and which kit the catalogue lists for your build. Two cars on the same badge and the same plate year can take different kits.

Labour is where the money goes, and labour on a clutch is almost entirely about getting the gearbox away from the engine and back on without leaning its weight on the input shaft. Book time for that varies enormously between models. Some transverse front wheel drive cars release with the driveshafts, a gearbox mount, a starter motor and the bellhousing bolts. Others need the front subframe dropped to give the box somewhere to go, and dropping a subframe brings steering, anti roll bar and sometimes exhaust work with it.
Access decides the rest. A battery tray, air box and bank of coolant pipes sitting over the bellhousing take longer than a clear run at it, and rusted subframe bolts on a car that has done fifteen Cardiff winters on salted roads add time nobody can see in a catalogue.
Then there are the two questions that separate a real quote from a rough one. Is the flywheel in it, and is the slave cylinder in it? Both sit behind the same gearbox you have already paid to remove, so both belong on the paper now rather than turning up later as surprises.

A dual mass flywheel is a flywheel split into two rotating halves joined by arc springs, so the engine’s firing pulses are damped before they reach the gearbox. That torsional damper is what makes a modern turbo diesel drivable at low revs without shaking the gear lever out of your hand. It also has a service life, which a solid flywheel largely does not.
Solid flywheels remain common on small petrol engines and on older cars. Dual mass units turn up on almost every modern turbo diesel, on high torque petrols and on plenty of ordinary family cars from the mid 2000s onwards, with LuK and Sachs supplying most of what is fitted in the UK. The pattern follows torque rather than badge, so a small diesel with a lot of low down pull is a likelier candidate than a bigger petrol making its power higher up.
You cannot read it off the V5C. Give us the registration and we decode the engine code, gearbox code and build date against the parts catalogue, which is where the answer lives, then confirm it with our own eyes once the box is off.
Measure it first, then decide, and never decide from mileage alone. With the gearbox out, we check rotational free play by marking the two halves and turning one against the other, then look for tilt or rock between the masses, heat discolouration on the friction face, grease weeping from the springs and damage to the ring gear teeth. Limits vary by unit. Within spec and clean, a flywheel can go back. Out of spec, it comes off.
Where reusing turns into a false economy is easy to state. Refit a worn dual mass flywheel behind a new clutch and the judder you brought the car in for is still there, the springs keep collapsing, and the new friction plate runs against a face that is glazed or scored. When it fails properly the gearbox comes out again, and the second labour bill matches the first. You have paid twice for the same access.
A dual mass flywheel with a damaged ring gear also chews starter motor pinions, so what began as a rattle at idle ends as a car that will not turn over on the drive.
Take a small three cylinder petrol hatchback, roughly ten years old, used for the school run around Llanrumney and little else. The pedal has gone light and the revs flare on the way up Newport Road. The gearbox on this layout comes out sideways with the driveshafts and a subframe that stays where it is, the flywheel is a solid one, and the release system is an external slave cylinder that never sees the inside of the bellhousing. The job is a clutch kit, a release bearing, a spigot bearing, a bleed and a road test. There is no flywheel line on the quote because there is no dual mass flywheel on the car, and the labour is at the lower end because access is straightforward. This is the car people have in mind when they hear a low figure quoted by a friend.
Kit plus the cylinder, on any car where the cylinder sits inside the bellhousing, and we say so on the quote rather than treating it as an extra. A concentric slave cylinder is a hydraulic ring around the gearbox input shaft with the release bearing built into it, pushing the clutch cover directly instead of working through a fork. Neat engineering, and it saves space. It also buries the part behind the gearbox.
The labour arithmetic settles the argument. Reaching that cylinder costs the entire gearbox removal, the expensive half of the job, while fitting one with the box already off costs a part and a few minutes. Leaving a cylinder with a hundred thousand miles on its seals behind a clutch you expect to last another decade is a gamble where the downside is the whole labour bill again.
Cars with an external slave cylinder and a release fork are a different conversation, because that cylinder can be changed on the ramp in a fraction of the time. We still check the fork pivot, the spigot bearing and the flexible hose while everything is apart, then bleed the hydraulic system and road test it. A clutch rebuilt but not bled correctly gives a pedal that feels wrong from the first mile.
Layout, almost entirely. A transverse front wheel drive car carries its gearbox across the engine bay with short driveshafts either side, and on a good design the box comes down once the driveshafts are pulled and the mounts released. That is the quickest arrangement in the trade, and it is what most hatchbacks use.
Rear wheel drive adds work at every stage. The propshaft comes out, usually with the centre bearing and flexible coupling disturbed, the exhaust often drops to clear it, there is a gearbox crossmember and tunnel to deal with, and the box is longer and heavier, so it comes out backwards on a transmission jack with the engine supported from above. None of that is difficult. All of it is hours.
Four wheel drive adds a transfer box, a second propshaft and more to disconnect before anything moves, and on some layouts the front subframe comes down as well. There are engine bays where the accepted method is to lift the engine and gearbox out together, because the alternative is worse. Same clutch, several extra hours of access, and that is the whole explanation for why your neighbour’s quote on a supermini bears no relation to yours on a four wheel drive pickup.

The job gets bigger and the parts list grows. A slipping clutch generates heat where the friction plate meets the flywheel face, and that heat glazes and scores the flywheel, discolours it and, on a dual mass unit, cooks the grease out of the springs. A flywheel that could have been measured and reused in January has to be replaced by March, and that is often the biggest line on the quote.
Beyond the flywheel, a clutch that never fully releases makes gear selection a fight, and driving it that way wears the input shaft splines and works the synchromesh harder than it was built for. A release bearing that has begun to rumble at the pedal will break up, and the debris goes where you do not want it.
Then there is where it leaves you. Clutches rarely fail politely on a quiet street, they fail pulling away on a hill or joining moving traffic, so the Newport Road corridor at half past five is a fair bet. Where the diagnosis is not obvious from the description, we road test the car first. That takes minutes and settles whether you are buying a clutch at all, which matters more than shaving anything off the quote. It also picks up what travels with a worn clutch, like a leaking rear main seal contaminating the friction plate.
The quote comes in writing with every line named, including the dual mass flywheel priced separately and marked as replace or as measure and reuse, so you can hold it against anyone else’s and see where the difference sits. Nothing is ordered until you have said yes to that piece of paper.
Now take a rear wheel drive 2.0 diesel estate on around 120,000 miles, bought used and driven daily over the bridge to Bristol. The complaint is a shudder pulling away from a standstill and a rattle at idle that disappears when the pedal goes down. That rattle is the dual mass flywheel telling you about itself. This job needs the propshaft out, the exhaust section down, the crossmember off and a long heavy gearbox drawn backwards on a jack, so the labour is comfortably more than double the hatchback in the earlier example. The flywheel measures outside its free play limit and has heat marking on the face, so it is replaced rather than reused, and the concentric slave cylinder goes in at the same time because it is sitting right there. Three separate lines on the quote that the hatchback did not have at all, plus the extra hours. Same words on the phone, entirely different job.
Most front wheel drive clutches are a full day, booked in first thing and back to you that evening where the parts are on the shelf and nothing seizes on the way apart. Rear wheel drive and four wheel drive jobs are more often two days, as are cars needing a subframe drop or a flywheel on order. The other option is not coming to us at all. Sometimes, and finding out takes about two minutes on the phone. A genuinely cheap quote answers all three cleanly, and is cheap because that garage is quick on that model. A quote that is cheap because it is incomplete will not survive the questions.
The commonest omission is the flywheel. A quote priced on the assumption that the flywheel gets reused reads brilliantly until the gearbox is out and the unit measures out of spec, and then the conversation happens with your car in pieces and your options gone. We would rather price it in from the start and take it off where the measurement allows.
Parts are the second thing. LuK, Sachs and Valeo supply the carmakers directly, and a kit from one of them behind a job with this much labour in it is money well spent, because the labour is what you are protecting. Unbranded kits exist and some are fine, but the failure rate is not the same and you cannot tell from the box. Third is the finish: the hydraulic system bled, the biting point checked, a road test before the keys come back. A quote with none of that has saved you a little on paper and left the outcome to chance.
Plenty, and this is where a road test earns its place before any parts get ordered. A pedal that sinks to the floor or feels spongy is frequently the clutch master cylinder or a leaking hydraulic line rather than anything inside the bellhousing, and the reservoir usually tells that story in seconds. That repair does not need the gearbox out.
Shudder pulling away is the other great impostor. Collapsed engine mounts and worn gearbox mounts let the whole driveline move, and the shake that reaches your seat feels exactly like a clutch grabbing. Worn driveshaft joints produce their own vibration under load. A rattle at idle that vanishes when you press the pedal usually is the dual mass flywheel, so that one tends to be real, though it still wants confirming.
Selection problems muddy it further, since a gearbox with tired synchromesh fights you into second in a way that reads as clutch drag. Buying the wrong job is the most expensive mistake available here, and it is avoidable.
