Do not turn the key. Petrol sitting in a diesel tank has damaged nothing yet, and the whole difference between a drain with a new filter and a rebuilt fuel system is whether the high pressure pump ever gets asked to pressurise it. Leave the ignition alone, do not press the start button to check anything, and do not let anybody push the car with the ignition on, because on many diesels the in-tank lift pump primes the moment the dash lights up.
That is the whole piece in one paragraph, and the rest explains why. Below: what petrol does to a common rail diesel, which components fail and in what order, why the debris spreads, what drives the bill, how a pump and injectors get tested rather than guessed at, where insurance sits, and the second failure that turns up months later when a system was drained but never cleaned.

Petrol strips out the lubrication that a diesel fuel system relies on to stay alive. Diesel is an oil. It is thick, greasy, and it leaves a microscopic film on every moving surface it touches, and that property has a name in the trade: lubricity. Common rail hardware was designed around it deliberately.
The high pressure fuel pump, the HPFP, is where that matters. It has no oil feed of its own. No gallery from the engine, no separate lubricant, nothing. The cam, the rollers or tappets, the plungers and the bores are all lubricated by the diesel passing through them, while that same pump squeezes fuel to somewhere between 1,600 and 2,500 bar. Bosch CP4 units, fitted across a lot of European and Japanese diesels, use a roller and cam follower arrangement that is particularly unforgiving about it.
Petrol behaves as a solvent instead. It is thin, it evaporates readily, and it dissolves the diesel film rather than adding to it. Even a modest percentage in the tank drops the lubricity off a cliff.
So the pump runs dry metal against dry metal, at extreme load, thousands of times a second. It scuffs, it picks up, and it sheds itself into the fuel. That begins within seconds of the engine firing, not hours. Anything already stopped at the roadside is better moved on a truck, which is why we run 24 hour vehicle recovery across Cardiff rather than talking people into a short drive home.
Damage runs front to back along the fuel path, and the high pressure pump takes the worst of it.
The fuel tank holds the wrong mixture first, and on most cars the in-tank lift pump sits inside it. That lift pump is a low pressure electric unit and it usually survives, because it is not doing high pressure work, although the swirl pot and sender assembly around it end up coated in whatever the system sends back later.
Running time matters more than distance. A car that fired up, ran rough for thirty seconds on a forecourt near Newport Road and was shut down has a very different bill from one driven up Eastern Avenue until it lost power. Only one of those has usually circulated metal through the injectors.

Because a common rail diesel is a loop, not a one-way pipe. Far more fuel is pumped forward than the engine burns, and the surplus cools and lubricates the injectors before running back down the return line to the fuel tank. That design is why a fault in one component contaminates everything.
Metal swarf from a dying pump therefore has two routes. Forward, under pressure, into the rail and out through the injector nozzles. Backwards, in the return flow, into the tank, where it settles alongside the lift pump pickup and the fuel it will be drawn back through again.
That is why a drain on its own is not a repair once the engine has run. Empty the tank, put clean diesel in, and the swarf is still in the tank base, the low pressure lines, the return pipework and the rail. Fit a new high pressure pump into that and you have fed a precision component a dose of grinding paste. It fails again, and no pump supplier will honour a warranty claim on it.
Decontamination means the tank drained, flushed and inspected, the lift pump and sender assembly cleaned or replaced, every feed and return line flushed or renewed, the filter replaced without exception, the rail cleaned or replaced, and the injectors assessed individually. That is the gap between a callout and fuel system repairs and pump replacement done as a single job with the car in a bay.
A driver filling up at a supermarket forecourt on the eastern side of the city put roughly half a tank of unleaded into a five year old 1.6 diesel hatchback before noticing the nozzle colour. She stopped, walked back to the kiosk and rang us from the pump with the car untouched. We recovered it in on the flatbed with the ignition never switched on. On the ramp the tank came down, the fuel drained into a clear container and separated into two visible layers, the tank was flushed, the filter housing emptied and a new filter fitted, then the system was primed on clean diesel and run up while we watched rail pressure on live data. Actual pressure tracked desired pressure exactly, the leak-off across all four injectors was even, and the drained fuel showed no glitter of metal at all. The car went home the same day with nothing replaced beyond a filter and a tank of diesel. That outcome existed only because nobody turned the key.
Nobody can give you a number from a web page, and any operator quoting one down the phone before seeing a fuel sample is guessing. What we can tell you is the ranking between the parts, because that barely changes from car to car.
The two heavyweight items are the high pressure pump and a full set of injectors, and the injector set is normally the larger of the two on a four cylinder car. Everything else sits well below them. The fuel rail is moderate, the in-tank lift pump and sender assembly are moderate, the fuel filter is minor, and fuel lines are cheap but occasionally awkward to route.
Labour is where quotes diverge most. Dropping the tank means raising the car, disconnecting the filler neck, breathers and wiring, and on some models moving the exhaust or a subframe brace for clearance. Injector removal carries its own risk on any diesel with real mileage, because carbon seizes them into the head and one stuck injector turns a short job into a long one.
Ask for the quote itemised: the parts list, the labour split by operation, whether the injectors are new, remanufactured or reused after testing, whether the tank comes out or is flushed in place, and whether coding is included. Two quotes that look different usually differ on that list, not on the hourly rate.
Diesel in a petrol engine is the better mistake to make, and the reason is lubricity again, this time working in your favour. Diesel is heavier than petrol, so nothing in the fuel system loses its protective film. No scuffing pump, no metal swarf, no contaminated rail. The problem becomes combustion rather than mechanical destruction.
Diesel does not vaporise readily and will not light reliably from a spark plug. A petrol engine on a diesel-heavy mixture therefore misfires, smokes grey or white from unburnt fuel, runs rough, hunts at idle and often will not restart once shut down. The spark plugs foul with wet, oily deposits and usually need replacing rather than cleaning, and the fuel filter comes out too.
Two exceptions deserve naming. Direct injection petrol engines carry their own high pressure fuel pump and finer petrol injectors, and while diesel will not starve those of lubrication, it clogs the nozzles and leaves the pump metering a fluid it was never designed for. The other is the catalytic converter, because raw unburnt fuel dumped into a hot exhaust either washes through the cat or lights inside it, and either route damages the substrate.
The verdict stands anyway. Drain it, replace the plugs and the filter, clear the codes and check the lambda readings, and most petrol cars are fine. It turns serious when somebody keeps driving because the car is still, technically, moving.

Rebuild the fuel system. Replacing the engine is almost always the wrong call on a misfuelling job, for a straightforward reason: the engine itself is not the damaged part. Wrong fuel wrecks the fuel system. Pistons, crank, bearings and head come through it intact in the great majority of cases, because the engine stops running long before it can hurt itself.
A used engine solves nothing on its own either. It arrives with somebody else’s pump and injectors of unknown history, and it still has to be plumbed into your contaminated tank, lines and rail. You would pay engine money and repeat the decontamination anyway.
The real comparison is a different one. Weigh the itemised fuel system quote against what the car is honestly worth as it sits. On a well kept car with years left in it, the rebuild wins easily. On a high mileage car already carrying a tired DPF, a leaking turbo or corrosion, the maths can land the other way, and salvage is the sensible answer.

Testing decides what gets replaced, not opinion, and three measurements settle it between them.
The rail pressure test comes first. On live data we compare desired rail pressure against actual while the engine cranks and while it runs under load, then run a pressure build test with the return restricted to see whether the pump can hold what the ECU asks for. A worn pump makes pressure slowly, falls short at higher demand, or gives a wandering figure the ECU keeps correcting.
The back leakage test, sometimes called the spill or leak-off test, judges the injectors. Pipes come off the return spigots, the engine is cranked, and the volume returned by each injector is collected and compared. Healthy injectors return a similar small amount. One returning far more has a scored needle or seat and is dumping rail pressure back to the tank, which is what gives you a hot engine that will not restart.
Then the fuel sample. Drained into a clear container it tells you a lot in a minute: the smell, the two layers as petrol separates above the diesel, and whether metallic glitter is suspended in it. We cut the old filter open and look at the media too, because that is where the first swarf collects.
Injector coding follows any replacement, since each injector carries calibration codes that have to be written to the ECU. All of this runs through engine diagnostics with live fuel pressure data rather than by eye.
Misfuelling is usually treated as an accidental damage event rather than a mechanical breakdown, but whether your own policy responds depends entirely on its wording, and we are not going to tell you what yours covers because we have not read it. Some policies include misfuelling as standard, some insurers sell it as an add-on, some exclude it outright, and some pay for the drain but not for consequential damage to the fuel system.
Phone your insurer before authorising work. Ask three questions plainly: is misfuelling covered, what is the excess, and would a claim affect the no-claims discount. On a simple drain the excess can exceed the job. On a full rebuild the answer usually flips.
Evidence decides most claims, so gather it while it exists. Keep the pump receipt, which shows the fuel grade, the pump number, the litres and the time. Photograph the nozzle and the pump before you leave the forecourt. Ask the site for their CCTV straight away, because retention periods are short. Keep the drained fuel sample, and ask us for the diagnostic report carrying the pressure and leak-off readings.
The forecourt is a harder route. The driver selects the nozzle, so sites rarely accept liability. The exception is where the fault was theirs, such as a mislabelled pump, a nozzle on the wrong hose or a tanker delivery into the wrong underground tank, and that last one gives itself away because several drivers report the same symptoms the same day.
The second bill arrives weeks or months after the first, and it is often the larger one. This is the pattern we see on cars drained by a callout van and handed straight back with no system work.
Injectors that survived the event but picked up light scoring do not fail immediately. They degrade. Leak-off rises gradually, so the car starts hard when hot, idles unevenly, then throws a rail pressure or misfire code out of nowhere. A leaking injector over-fuels its cylinder, and that raw diesel has to go somewhere.
The exhaust is where it goes. Unburnt fuel loads the DPF far faster than normal, the filter attempts regeneration more often, and the regenerations do not complete because the source of the soot is still there. Soot and ash build until the differential pressure sensor reports a blocked filter and the ECU drops the car into limp mode. The EGR valve cokes up the same way and starts sticking.
Fuel washing past the piston rings meanwhile thins the engine oil, and diluted oil is what feeds the turbocharger bearings. That is how a badly handled misfuelling eventually costs a turbo, months later, with nobody connecting the two events.
A van driver filled up on the way out to a job in St Mellons, realised nothing, and drove. About a mile along the road the engine lost power and cut out, and he restarted it twice at the kerb before it stopped for good. Recovered in, the fuel sample came out with fine metallic glitter suspended in it and the filter, cut open, had a grey sheen across the media. Rail pressure on cranking never reached half of what the ECU was requesting, and the leak-off test showed two of the four injectors returning several times the volume of the other two. That is a pump that had already begun shedding itself and injectors that had swallowed the evidence. The job became the pump, the injector set with coding, the rail, the filter, the tank dropped and cleaned, the lift pump assembly and the feed and return lines. Had he stopped at the first loss of power and not restarted it, the outcome would probably have stopped at the pump.
The symptoms overlap with several ordinary diesel faults, so the fuel sample settles the argument rather than the way the car behaves. That said, the behaviour has a signature worth knowing.
Petrol in a running diesel produces a loud metallic knocking or rattling under load, because it ignites at the wrong point in the cycle. Power falls away, white or grey smoke pours from the exhaust, the engine hunts and stumbles, warning lights appear and the car drops into limp mode before cutting out. Hard starting or no start follows.
Now the impostors. Failed glow plugs give white smoke and rough running from cold, then clear as the engine warms. A blocked fuel filter or air drawn in through a perished feed pipe causes similar power loss and cutting out. A failing rail pressure regulator produces the same pressure codes, a loaded DPF gives limp mode, and worn injectors on a high mileage diesel knock too.
The sample separates all of that from the fuel question. Drain some off into a clear jar and let it stand. Petrol sits above the diesel as a lighter layer, the smell is unmistakable, and a smear on a clean surface flashes off in seconds instead of leaving the oily residue diesel leaves. Metallic glitter tells you the pump has already started to go.

Leave the ignition completely alone and have the car recovered rather than driven, because with the engine never started the wrong fuel has not reached the high pressure pump and the job is normally a tank drain, a flush, a new fuel filter and fresh diesel. Do not switch the ignition on to check anything, since many diesels prime the in-tank lift pump the moment the dash powers up. Do not accept a push start or a tow with the ignition live either. Damage starts within seconds of the engine running, not after a set distance, because the high pressure pump loses its lubricating film as soon as the diluted fuel reaches it. There is no safe distance and no safe percentage. A car that ran for thirty seconds and was shut down has a real chance of coming through with a drain and a filter. A car driven until it lost power has almost certainly circulated metal debris into the rail and injectors.
No, because a drain only removes the fuel and leaves the metal debris that the pump has already shed sitting in the tank, the lines, the rail and the injectors. Fit a new pump into that and it is fed grinding paste from the first start, which is why pump suppliers reject warranty claims where the system was not decontaminated. The tank, the filter, the low pressure feed and return lines and the rail all have to be dealt with, and the injectors have to be tested.
Rarely, because diesel lubricates rather than strips, so the fuel system is not mechanically destroyed and the fault is a combustion one instead. Expect misfiring, grey or white smoke, rough running and fouled spark plugs, and expect a drain, new plugs and a new fuel filter to put it right. The two things to watch are direct injection petrol engines, where diesel clogs the finer injectors, and the catalytic converter, which raw unburnt fuel can damage if the car is driven on.
