  • Garage Near Llanrumney: MOT Preparation, Welding and Repairs 1.2 Miles Away

CF3 MOT and Service Centre is 1.2 miles from Llanrumney, on Wentloog Road in Rumney, CF3 1TH, close enough to drop your car off and walk home along Newport Road. For Llanrumney drivers the job we are asked about most is the MOT, and on a car that has done a few years around the estate, the best way to pass first time is a proper check before the test rather than a surprise on the day.

That is what this page is built around. What an older car is likely to need, the checks you can do yourself on the drive in ten minutes, what a tester finds underneath that you cannot see, and how to get the car to us and back without losing a day.

How do I get from Llanrumney to the garage and back?

At 1.2 miles, the walk back from the garage to most of Llanrumney takes around twenty to thirty minutes.

Drive down to Newport Road, head west into Rumney, and turn off towards Wentloog Road. From the estate the route runs down Ball Road or one of the other roads that join Newport Road, and the whole trip is 1.2 miles, a few minutes in the car. The garage is at Unit 4C Wentloog Buildings, CF3 1TH.

Getting back is the part people ask about. Most Llanrumney customers simply walk home, or catch a bus along Newport Road. If the walk is not practical, our collection and delivery service covers Llanrumney, so the car can be picked up from outside your house and brought back when it is finished.

Llanrumney, or Llanrhymni in Welsh, grew up from the 1950s onwards as one of Cardiff’s big housing estates, around Llanrumney Hall and the shops on Countisbury Avenue. A lot of the cars on its drives are well past their first few MOTs, and that is exactly the kind of car where preparation makes the biggest difference to the bill.

Why does an older car need a check before its MOT?

On a car over ten years old, most of the expensive MOT items are found with the car in the air.

Because the cost of an MOT failure is not the fee, it is the timing. When a car fails, you have a list of repairs, a deadline and often no choice about where to have them done or how quickly. When the same faults are found a week or two earlier, you can get a price, order parts, spread the work if you need to, and take the car in for its test knowing what the tester will see.

Older cars fail for predictable reasons. Rubber suspension bushes crack and perish. Coil springs rust and snap near the bottom coil. Steel brake pipes corrode along the underside. Sills and floor pans weaken from the inside. Exhausts blow and emissions creep up. None of these show from the driver’s seat, and some of them do not show at all until someone looks underneath with a light.

Our pre-MOT check is that look underneath, done before the test rather than during it. It is not a replacement for the MOT, and it does not produce a certificate, but it gives you a clear picture of what is coming. Our guide on why cars fail their MOT in Cardiff lists the failures we see most.

Some of the checks do not need a garage at all, and they are the easy failures to avoid.

What can I check on the drive before the test?

A tread depth gauge costs very little and settles the tyre question in seconds.

More than you might think. A handful of the most common MOT failures are items you can see and fix yourself in ten minutes, and each one you catch at home is one less reason to fail.

  • Lights. Walk round with the lights on: headlights on dipped and main beam, sidelights, indicators front, rear and side, brake lights (ask someone to press the pedal), the rear fog light and the number plate lights.
  • Tyres. The legal minimum is 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre, all the way round. Look for cuts, bulges and cords showing on the sidewall too.
  • Wipers and washers. Blades that smear or skip, and an empty washer bottle, are both avoidable fails. Top up the screenwash before the test.
  • Windscreen. Damage larger than 10mm in the area directly in front of the driver, or larger than 40mm elsewhere in the swept area, is a failure.
  • Horn, mirrors and seatbelts. The horn should work, mirrors should be secure, and every seatbelt should lock when tugged sharply.
  • Warning lights. A lit engine management, airbag, ABS or brake warning light is an MOT problem. Our engine management light guide explains the common causes.
  • Number plates. Clean, readable and correctly spaced.

Eight checks you can do on the drive before an MOT. Anything underneath is where a pre-MOT check comes in.

If a bulb has gone, a blade is split or the screenwash is empty, fixing it before the test saves a failure on the certificate. The items underneath the car need a lift, and that is where the more expensive faults tend to hide.

What does the tester find underneath an older car?

Close-up of a heavily rusted rear subframe mount and a cracked rubber suspension bush on the underside of an older car
Cracked bushes and corroded mounting points are routine finds on cars that have done many winters.

The same short list, again and again. Worn suspension parts, corroded brake pipes and weakened structure are the underneath failures that turn a routine MOT into a repair bill.

Suspension. Bushes, ball joints, drop links and springs all wear. A tester checks for excessive play and for broken or corroded springs. Knocks over speed bumps, a car that wanders on the road, or uneven tyre wear are the signs to mention when you book. Our suspension repair service covers the replacement parts.

Brakes. Beyond the pads and discs, older cars often fail on corroded brake pipes, seized calipers or an imbalance between the two sides on the brake test. Our brake repairs include pipe replacement.

Corrosion. Excessive rust that weakens the structure near a load-bearing point is a failure. On many older cars it can be repaired by cutting out the weak metal and welding in new steel, which our vehicle welding service does in house.

From the workshop

A pattern we see often with cars from the estates north of Rumney: a small hatchback of around fifteen years comes in for a pre-MOT check because the owner has noticed a clonk from the back over speed bumps. On the lift, a rear coil spring has broken near its lowest coil, a common failure point where water and salt sit. Left alone, that is an MOT failure and a car that sits lower on one corner. Found a week before the test, the springs are replaced as a pair, the owner knows the cost in advance, and the car goes in for its MOT with that problem already off the list.

How does the MOT itself work with us?

Lights are part of every MOT. A blown bulb found before the test is a two minute fix; found during it, it is a failure.

You book, drop the car off and walk home, and the test takes around an hour. When it is done, we ring you with the result. If the car has passed, the pass is recorded on the DVSA database straight away. If it has failed, we explain each item, give you a price and wait for your agreement before doing any work.

The retest rules work in your favour if the car stays with us. If you leave it for repair and it is retested within 10 working days, the partial retest has no fee. If you take it away to be repaired and bring it back within 10 working days, a partial retest fee can apply. Some simple items, such as lamps, wipers and tyres, can be retested free by the end of the next working day. The maximum fee for a car MOT is £54.85 with no VAT, and our guide to MOT cost in Cardiff sets out how the total builds up.

If you cannot drop off during the day, pre-booked evening appointments after 5pm and Saturday appointments are available. Details are on our MOT testing page.

Plenty of Llanrumney drivers book the MOT and a service for the same visit. The service puts fresh oil and filters in and gives the car a thorough look over, anything it turns up can be dealt with before the test, and the car only needs one drop-off and one walk home instead of two. On an older car that is also the easiest way to keep a regular service history, which helps when the time comes to sell it.

When is a repair on an older car not worth doing?

When the repairs add up to more than the car is worth to you, and we will say so. Most MOT failures on older cars are worth fixing: a pair of springs, a set of brake pipes or a welded sill section keeps a sound car on the road for years. Where several structural areas have corroded at once, or the car needs major mechanical work on top, the numbers can stop making sense.

We give you an itemised price so you can make that decision properly, and we will point out which items are safety critical and which are advisories you can plan for. Every piece of work waits for your agreement first.

Which nearby areas do we also cover?

Rumney is our home district, and our garage in Rumney page covers local routes and the welding work we do. St Mellons is 1.5 miles away, and our St Mellons page covers commuter cars and business vans. Pentwyn, Trowbridge and Pontprennau are all a short drive, and our areas we cover page shows the full list.

Questions from Llanrumney drivers

How far is your garage from Llanrumney?

About 1.2 miles. We are at Unit 4C Wentloog Buildings, Wentloog Road, Rumney, CF3 1TH, reached via Newport Road.

What is a pre-MOT check?

It is an inspection before the MOT that looks at the items most likely to fail, including suspension, brakes, tyres, lights and corrosion, so repairs can be priced and planned before test day.

Can I walk home after dropping my car off?

Yes. Most of Llanrumney is a walk of around twenty to thirty minutes, or a short bus ride along Newport Road. We can also collect the car from your home.

Is a chipped windscreen an MOT failure?

Damage larger than 10mm in the area directly in front of the driver, or larger than 40mm anywhere else in the area the wipers clear, is a failure.

Do you weld older cars that fail on rust?

Yes. We cut out weakened metal and weld in new steel on sills, floor pans and suspension mounts, then retest the car in the same building.

Is the MOT retest free?

If the car is left with us for repair and retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free. Some simple items can also be retested free by the end of the next working day.
