  • Car Service Prices in Cardiff: Interim, Full and Major Explained

In Cardiff, an interim service typically costs around £154, a full service around £197 and a major service around £286, based on the average prices BookMyGarage listed for Cardiff garages when we checked in September 2026. The cheapest listed prices were about £105 for an interim, £145 for a full and £180 for a major service. Your own price depends on the engine, the oil and parts it needs, and exactly what each garage includes.

That last part is where most confusion comes from. There is no legal definition of an interim, full or major service, so two garages can use the same name for quite different jobs. This guide explains what each level usually covers, why quotes vary, which service your car actually needs and how to compare prices properly.

Key takeaways

Car service prices in Cardiff, at a glance

  • Cardiff averages in September 2026: interim around £154, full around £197, major around £286 (BookMyGarage listings).
  • An interim service is mainly oil, filter and safety checks; a full service adds more filters and inspections; a major service adds parts such as spark plugs and fluids.
  • There is no legal standard for what each service includes, so compare the checklist, not just the name.
  • Oil specification, parts quality, engine size and whether VAT is included all move the price.
  • You can have your car serviced at an independent garage without affecting the manufacturer warranty, provided the schedule and correct parts are followed.
  • Booking a service with your MOT saves a second visit, and we discount the MOT when it is booked with a full or major service.

How much does each type of service cost in Cardiff?

An oil and filter change is at the heart of every service level. What is added on top is what separates interim, full and major.

Based on the prices listed by Cardiff garages on BookMyGarage in September 2026:

  • Interim service: average around £154, with the cheapest listing about £105.
  • Full service: average around £197, with the cheapest listing about £145.
  • Major service: average around £286, with the cheapest listing about £180.

Treat these as a guide to the local market rather than a price for your car. A small petrol hatchback usually sits towards the lower end. A larger diesel, a car that needs a specialist oil or a vehicle with a lot of oil capacity sits higher. Main dealer prices are typically above the independent average.

The range between the cheapest and average price is wide because the same name can cover very different amounts of work. The only way to know whether a cheap full service is good value is to see what it includes.

What is included in an interim, full and major service?

Every garage sets its own checklist, but most follow a similar pattern.

Interim service

An interim service is designed for cars that cover high mileage and need attention between annual services, typically around every six months or 6,000 miles. It usually includes an engine oil and oil filter change, fluid level checks and top-ups, and checks on lights, tyres, wipers, brakes and the battery. It is a maintenance visit rather than a thorough inspection.

Full service

The air filter is one of the parts typically added at a full service. A clogged filter costs fuel and performance.

A full service is the annual service for most cars, typically every 12 months or 12,000 miles. On top of the interim work, it usually adds the air filter, a more detailed inspection of brakes, steering, suspension, exhaust and bodywork, a check of drive belts and hoses, and on some cars the cabin filter or fuel filter. It is the service usually meant when a car is described as due.

Major service

New spark plugs, a pollen cabin filter and an oil filter laid out on a clean workshop cloth
A major service typically adds parts that wear on a two year cycle, such as spark plugs, the cabin filter and, on diesels, the fuel filter.

A major service is typically done every 24 months or 24,000 miles. It includes everything in a full service plus the parts that wear more slowly: spark plugs on petrol engines, the fuel filter on many diesels, the cabin or pollen filter, and often a brake fluid change. Some garages also check or replace coolant according to the manufacturer schedule.

Manufacturer schedules vary, and some modern cars use variable service intervals that stretch well beyond a year. The right service for your car is the one its schedule calls for, which is why we check the service history before recommending a level.

Knowing what is included explains part of the price difference between levels. It does not explain why two quotes for the same level can be so far apart.

Why can two quotes for a full service be so different?

The right oil specification for your engine can cost considerably more than a generic grade, and it matters.

Five things account for most of the gap.

Oil specification. Many modern engines need oil that meets a specific manufacturer approval, and diesels with a particulate filter usually need a low-ash oil. The correct oil costs more than a generic grade. A quote that seems cheap may be using the wrong one.

Oil capacity and engine type. A small three-cylinder petrol engine might take a few litres of oil. A large diesel or a six-cylinder engine takes considerably more, and its filters cost more too.

Parts quality. Filters and plugs from recognised suppliers cost more than budget alternatives. Poor filters can restrict flow or break down early.

What is actually on the checklist. One garage’s full service may include an air filter, a cabin filter and a brake fluid test. Another’s may not. Always ask for the list.

VAT. Some garages advertise prices before VAT, others include it. A price that looks lower may add 20 per cent at the end.

When you compare, compare like for like: the same level, the same oil specification, the same parts included, and prices shown on the same VAT basis.

Which service does my car need?

Start with the service book or the digital service record, which shows the last service and what was done. Then look at the manufacturer schedule for your car, which sets out what is due at each interval. If your car shows a service reminder on the dashboard, that is based on the schedule too.

As a rough guide, if the last service was a full service a year ago, the next may be a major service. If the car covers a lot of miles, an interim service in between keeps the oil fresh. If you are not sure, give us the registration and we will check what is due. Our guide to how often to service a car explains intervals in more detail.

For cars with a timing belt or wet belt, the replacement interval is separate from the routine service and is often the most expensive item in the schedule. Our guide to wet belts and cambelts explains how to tell which your car has.

Will an independent service affect my warranty?

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which is why a major service often includes a test or a change.

Not if the work follows the manufacturer schedule and uses parts of matching quality. UK competition rules allow you to have a car serviced at an independent garage during its warranty, rather than only at a main dealer. What matters is that the right service is done at the right time, with the correct oil and parts, and that it is properly recorded.

We service to the manufacturer schedule, use the oil specification your engine requires, and record the service so your history stays complete. Keep your invoices, as they are the evidence if a warranty question ever comes up.

From the workshop

A pattern we see with cars bought secondhand: the driver books a full service because the car is “about a year” since the last one. The digital service record shows the previous owner only ever had interim services, and the car is well past its schedule for spark plugs, a cabin filter and a brake fluid change. A full service would have missed those. The car gets the major service it was actually due, and the owner has a clear starting point for the next service instead of a gap in the history that could affect the car’s value later.

What are the signs a car is overdue a service?

Some cars show a spanner symbol or a service message on the dashboard. Others give quieter clues:

  • The oil on the dipstick is very dark, thick or below the minimum mark.
  • The engine sounds rougher or louder than it used to, or fuel economy has dropped.
  • Brakes squeal, grind or feel different.
  • A warning light has appeared, such as the engine management light.
  • It has been more than a year, or more than the scheduled mileage, since the last service.

Leaving a service too long rarely saves money. Old oil and blocked filters wear engines faster, and small problems that a service would catch early become bigger repairs.

Is it cheaper to book a service with the MOT?

It usually works out cheaper and it is certainly easier. We discount the MOT when it is booked with a full or major service, you only need one drop-off, and anything the service finds, such as worn brake pads or a blown bulb, can be sorted before the tester sees it. Our guide to MOT cost in Cardiff explains how the MOT side of the bill works.

If you cannot get to us during the day, pre-booked evening and Saturday appointments are available, and our collection and delivery service covers Rumney, St Mellons, Llanrumney and the rest of east Cardiff.

How do we price a service at CF3?

By your registration. That tells us the exact engine, the oil specification and the parts your car needs, so the price is for your car rather than a generic figure. Enter it in the booking form on this page for an instant price, or ring us and we will explain what the service includes. If we find anything beyond the service during the inspection, we call you with a price and do nothing until you agree. See our car servicing page for more on how we work.

Car service price questions

How much is a full car service in Cardiff?

Cardiff garages listed on BookMyGarage averaged around £197 for a full service in September 2026, with the cheapest listing about £145. The price for your car depends on its engine, oil and parts.

What is the difference between an interim and a full service?

An interim service is mainly an oil and filter change with basic checks, usually every six months. A full service is the annual service, adding filters such as the air filter and a more detailed inspection.

How often do I need a major service?

Typically every two years or 24,000 miles, but follow the manufacturer schedule for your car, as intervals vary.

Does servicing at an independent garage void my warranty?

No, provided the service follows the manufacturer schedule, uses parts and oil of the right specification and is properly recorded.

Why do service prices vary so much?

Mainly because of oil specification, engine size, parts quality, what is included in the checklist and whether prices include VAT.

Can I get my MOT and service done together?

Yes. We carry out both in one visit and discount the MOT when it is booked with a full or major service.
